Could a fresh start in Portugal finally unlock the immense potential that first brought Matheus França to Selhurst Park?
The 22-year-old forward has officially embarked on the next chapter of his career, joining Portuguese Primeira Liga side FC Alverca on loan until the end of the 2026/27 season. For a player who arrived in south London with heavy expectations and a hefty price tag, this move represents a crucial opportunity to rediscover the rhythm and form that once made him one of South America’s most exciting young prospects.
The Journey to South London
França’s European adventure began back in the summer of 2023 when Crystal Palace swooped to sign the attacking midfielder from Brazilian giants Flamengo in a deal worth €20 million, supplemented by an extra €5 million in add-ons, tying him down on a contract until June 2028. That move followed a standout pre-season in which he netted four times for the Eagles, catching the eye of scouts with his technical flair and eye for goal.
However, replicating that initial spark in the Premier League proved a difficult task. Struggling to fully establish himself in the demanding physical landscape of English football, França managed a total of 19 appearances across all competitions for Palace. Despite the stop-start nature of his time in red and blue, he did carve out a memorable moment in April 2025, bagging his first and only goal for the club with a dramatic last-minute equaliser against Southampton.
Seeking Continuity After Brazil Return
With regular minutes hard to come by in England, the decision was made last season to send França back to his homeland on loan. He spent the campaign with Campeonato Brasileiro Série A side Vasco da Gama the very division where he initially burst onto the scene with Flamengo.
During his stint back in Brazil, França featured 24 times as he looked to bank valuable playing time. Yet, while it provided a platform to play, the spell at Vasco was ultimately viewed as a below-par chapter, prompting another temporary exit this summer as he searches for the consistency and stability that defined his breakthrough year under Dorival Júnior at Flamengo back in 2022.
A Familiar Environment at Alverca
Now heading to the Portuguese top flight, França joins an Alverca side that has enjoyed a remarkable rise, securing back-to-back promotions to reach the Primeira Liga in 2025. As the club looks to cement its status among Portugal’s elite, the addition of a player with França’s pedigree is a significant coup.
To help him settle into his new surroundings, the young forward will not be short of familiar faces. Alverca’s squad boasts a strong Brazilian contingent, including experienced midfielder Zé Rafael formerly of Palmeiras, Bahia, and Santos and Rayan Lucas, a fellow Flamengo academy product who spent last season with Sporting.
The Long-Term Vision
Despite his struggles to nail down a regular starting spot in south London thus far, Crystal Palace clearly retained high hopes when tying him to a long-term contract. Indeed, such was Flamengo’s belief in his ultimate ceiling when selling him in 2023 that the Brazilian club even shrewdly inserted a bonus clause into the initial deal with Palace in the event that França ever goes on to win the Ballon d’Or.
For now, though, the ambitions are much more grounded. This loan move to Alverca is all about minutes, momentum, and finding joy on the pitch once again. If França can harness the continuity he is seeking in Portugal, the story of his time as a Crystal Palace player might still have a very bright second act.
