Following Palace’s string of poor performances it was time for Neil Warnock to go. The home defeat to Southampton was the last straw for fans and the CPFC board, but who is next in line for the managerial role? Could it be an old friend?
The news got out Tuesday morning that Alan Pardew is set to return to Selhurst Park but this time, not as a player as a manager. The Palace legend who has been the Newcastle United boss for four years, is set to make a shock exit from the Magpies and was spotted at the Newcastle training ground saying his goodbyes to staff and players. He was then in attendance at Aston Villa on New Year’s Day with Co-Chairmen Steve Parish and Steve Browett, plus chief executive Phil Alexander.
Pardew, who was voted Manager of the Year in 2012, has refused to answer any questions on the possibility that he is the new Palace manager. However, it is known Pardew has been unhappy at Newcastle for some time after fans turned against him calling for him to be sacked. Newcastle were in the bottom three at the start of October, since then the Magpies have turned around their fortunes and are now ninth in the league.
Warnock never really hacked it as the Palace manager and was sacked after just four months. The team’s 3-1 defeat and poor Boxing Day performance against Southampton saw loyal fans, usually extremely vocal, silent for most of the match and driven to chant ‘You Don’t Know What You’re Doing’ when Warnock took off Palace favourite Yannick Bolaise. Warnock was only ever seen as a temporary replacement for Tony Pulis, who shockingly left the club two days before the season started in a row with the management.
With Palace sitting at 18 in the league table, will we see a difference with Pardew on board? Only time will tell.
