Kwesi Appiah scored three goals in the U21’s 4-2 win over Leeds United yesterday and has been impressing in all of his appearances for the side managed by Garry Issott, since returning from the African Cup of Nations with Ghana.
The 24-year-old was on loan at League Two side Cambridge United before his surprise call-up to the January tournament with Ghana, a side that is now managed by former Chelsea manager Avram Grant. Appiah scored six goals in his 19 appearances for the Football League side this term after previously impressing in a loan spell last season where he helped them gain promotion from the conference after scoring ten goals in 13 starts.
Alan Pardew and his coaching team will be looking at sending out the young striker to a Championship club if possible before the emergency loan window closes for Football League clubs to enable him to get more game time at a higher level than previously played at. If they struggle to attract any concrete attention towards first team football, they could look lower down the divisions with many teams though to be growing an interest in the player.
His contact expires at the end of the season, so any move now will prove crucial to what happens to him in the summer – whether he will agree to a contract extension at Selhurst Park or move on to a Football League side to get the game time that he should be getting.
