Speaking after the defeat, manager Alan Pardew was asked why Cabaye missed the City clash. He said:

Cabaye was injured and we’re sweating on him for Saturday.

Pardew confirmed that full back Pape Souare and strikers Connor Wickham and Marouane Chamakh are all back in training but won’t be ready to face Man United.

There is also a doubt over midfielder Jason Puncheon who missed the loss at the Etihad due to illness.

James McArthur also missed the Capital One Cup game after his wife gave birth to a baby boy in the early hours of Thursday morning, but he should be in the squad for Saturday’s game.
