It is the same old story at Selhurst Park, isn’t it?
The powers that be in SE25 love to drag their feet during a transfer window, and right now, the boardroom’s indecision is driving the fan base up the wall. We have spent weeks watching Palace dither over a deal for Brest centre-back Raphaël Le Guen.
The 19-year-old defender actually visited our Copers Cope training ground towards the end of July and agreed to personal terms. Yet, the club hierarchy continues to lock itself in agonisingly slow negotiations with Brest over the final fee.
Rather than wrapping up a straightforward deal, the board keeps contemplating alternative options, including a loan move for Chelsea’s Axel Disasi. This endless hesitation has now opened the door for rival clubs to swoop in and steal a massive talent right under their noses.
Arsenal threaten to hijack the deal
Alan Nixon recently reported that Palace have a £12m package in the pipeline for the French youngster. However, Foot Mercato now claims that Arsenal are actively eyeing a move for Le Guen after losing William Saliba to a serious injury.
Mikel Arteta desperately wants cover in central defence. While the Gunners would ideally prefer a more experienced figurehead, they now view Le Guen as a serious option, alongside Fulham who are also monitoring the situation.
Arsenal already beat their London rivals to the signing of Christos Tzolis earlier in the window. Allowing them to snatch Le Guen as well would represent an absolute catastrophe for our summer rebuilding plans.
The Pull of Pierre Sage and the SE25 Project
Fortunately for Palace Foot Mercato explicitly highlights within their report that the Brest No. 71 still favours a move to South London. The opportunity to play under our new manager, Pierre Sage, acts as a huge point of attraction for the French teenager. Le Guen clearly buys into the project we are building in SE25, alongside the prospect of immediate, meaningful game time in the Premier League.
That positive outlook could quickly shift if Arsenal decide to make a firm, aggressive push. The Gunners hold considerable clout, boasting the reigning Premier League title and a legendary history with French icons like Thierry Henry and former manager Patrick Vieira. Brest have already lined up Moussa Diarra as Le Guen’s direct replacement, meaning every single party stands ready to execute this transfer except for Crystal Palace.
Time for the board to finalise the deal
The mere fact that a club of Arsenal’s stature is tracking Le Guen tells you everything about his potential. Brest supporters themselves have voiced immense belief in the defender, insisting he possesses all the attributes to evolve into a top-tier star in the Premier League.
Our board needs to wake up, pay the required fee, and close the deal before another top target slips away. We cannot afford to let another promising signing collapse due to sheer administrative procrastination.
