Jean-Philippe Mateta’s situation at Crystal Palace has taken an extraordinary legal turn after reports emerged that the striker has contacted FIFA to argue his current contract is void.
The 28-year-old forward played 63 minutes in Pierre Sage’s side during their 2-0 defeat to Everton on opening weekend. However, off-field developments surrounding his future are now threatening to overshadow Palace’s early Premier League campaign, with Tottenham Hotspur closely monitoring the Frenchman’s availability.
FIFA Rules on Contract Dispute
Mateta originally signed a four-and-a-half-year deal when he completed a permanent transfer to Selhurst Park in January 2022. Reports in December 2024 indicated that Palace had triggered an option to extend his contract by a further 12 months, keeping him tied to the club until 2027.
However, according to BBC Sport, Mateta has formally challenged the validity of that extra year, claiming he is no longer legally bound to the club.
The battle has already reached footballing governing bodies:
- Independent Premier League Tribunal: Assessed Mateta’s claims and deemed the contract extension remains fully binding.
- FIFA Ruling: Confirmed earlier this week that overruling the 12-month extension falls outside its global jurisdiction.
Neither party has issued an official statement explaining why Mateta believes the extension lacks legal standing.
The Collapse of the AC Milan Move
This legal standoff represents the latest chapter in a turbulent eight months for the striker. Mateta informed Palace hierarchy of his desire to leave back in January, prompting the Eagles to place a £35 million price tag on his head.
AC Milan eventually agreed a £26 million deal, but the transfer dramatically collapsed after the Italian club’s extensive medical flagged up a pre-existing knee problem. The injury required immediate surgery, though Mateta later expressed gratitude to Milan’s medical team during an interview with Canal+ Foot:
“My knee injury was actually more serious than I had been told. At that moment, when they explained it to me, all sorts of things went through my head. Ultimately, I don’t regret anything, because if I hadn’t done that medical exam, how long would I have been dragging this knee issue along? Luckily, I had that medical and found out exactly what was wrong with me.”
Selection Dilemmas for Sage Ahead of Deadline Day
Following his knee surgery, Mateta returned in time to help Palace lift the UEFA Conference League trophy. However, the club had already spent £47 million to sign Wolves striker Jørgen Strand Larsen as his long-term replacement, forcing both forwards to compete directly for starting spots.
With Tottenham actively searching for attacking reinforcements before the transfer deadline, Palace now face an agonising dilemma. Chairman Steve Parish must decide whether to hold firm on Mateta’s binding contract or sell an unsettled forward to avoid prolonged legal friction inside Selhurst Park.
