Darren Powell’s Crystal Palace Under-21s delivered a performance full of grit, quality, and character at Sutton United’s Borough Sports Ground, edging past Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 to kick off their Premier League International Cup campaign in style.
Playing under the lights on Wednesday night, the young Eagles extended their unbeaten run to three matches. While official reports from the club’s media channels captured the blow-by-blow action, the story of the night belonged to a stunning Adler Nascimento free-kick, a vital Harry Lee penalty save, and a trademark Seb Williams strike that ultimately subdued the French giants.
Nascimento Magic and Lee Heroics Set the Tone
Palace started on the front foot and nearly broke the deadlock inside the opening minute when Charlie Walker-Smith forced Alessandro Longoni into a sharp diving save with a looping header.
They did not have to wait long for the opener. Nascimento earned a free-kick on the edge of the area, dusted himself off, and produced an absolute masterpiece. The youngster whipped a sublime effort over the wall and straight into the top corner, leaving the PSG goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
The visitors responded by applying heavy pressure, but Powell’s side stood firm. The game exploded into drama right before the interval when a clumsy challenge inside the area handed PSG a golden chance to equalize from the spot on the stroke of half-time.
Step forward, Harry Lee. Carrying his stellar form from Friday’s win over Aston Villa into the contest, the Palace keeper produced an outstanding diving save to keep Quentin Ndjantou’s penalty out. PSG hit the underside of the bar from the resulting corner, but Palace survived the scare to take a well-earned lead into the break.
Williams Doubles the Advantage
Palace picked up right where they left off after the interval, maintaining their defensive discipline while hunting for a crucial second goal.
That insurance goal arrived just past the hour mark. Euan Danaher started the move by finding Gibbard down the left, who cut a slick ball back into the path of Benji Casey. Casey cleverly laid it off for the onrushing Seb Williams, and the midfielder smashed a crisp half-volley past Longoni to make it 2-0.
The night also provided valuable milestone moments for the next generation of talent. Summer signing Amaari Sealey stepped off the bench just past the hour mark to make his competitive Under-21 debut, before in-form Under-18s captain AJ Greaves also entered the fray late on.
Holding Firm Under Late Pressure
PSG refused to go quietly and punished a rare lapse in concentration when Noa Bezeme slipped in behind to halve the deficit with 16 minutes remaining.
The visitors piled bodies forward in search of an equalizer, testing Palace’s resolve as the clock ticked down. Sealey nearly put the game beyond doubt in the dying embers, racing down the left before squaring for Casey, whose low strike was desperately blocked on the line amid a chaotic sea of bodies.
Palace weathered four nervous minutes of added time with fierce determination, securing a famous victory that puts them straight to the top of Group D in the International Cup.
With three matches unbeaten under their belts, Powell’s side now enjoy a brief breather before shifting their focus to an EFL Trophy clash against Swindon Town on Tuesday, 15th September.
