Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson as a potential replacement for Emiliano Martinez. The English shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the Villans, who are set to lose their Argentine number one.
According to Football Insider, Villa are keen on turning to Henderson if Martinez leaves as expected. The 33-year-old looks set to move to Serie A giants Juventus.
Former Villa scout Mick Brown has suggested that Unai Emery’s side have been keeping an eye on Henderson in recent years. He has been a huge success at Selhurst Park, helping the Eagles win the FA Cup and UEFA Conference League.
Villa eye Henderson
Brown claims that Villa are among the clubs showing interest in Henderson who has two years left on his contract. He states that Palace will do their utmost to keep the 29-year-old.
Henderson joined the South London outfit from Manchester United in the summer of 2023 in a £20m deal. He has since made 116 appearances, including in the finals against Manchester City and Rayo Vallecano.
The English goalkeeper had been Oliver Glasner’s number one throughout the Austrian’s historic reign. New manager Pierre Sage will undoubtedly be eager to ensure he stays at the club.
Chelsea also admirers
Villa aren’t the only club that has been linked with Henderson this summer. Chelsea are believed to have made an initial enquiry, indicating they have seriously considered a swoop.
The Blues have yet to make a formal bid for Henderson, but could be on the lookout for a new number one. It’s a nuisance for Sage, who won’t want a summer of speculation to grow over his shot-stopper’s future.
Whether Henderson would agree to a move remains to be seen. He’s become a fan favourite and holds a special relationship with Palace fans.
